☆ Trade leaders urge governments around the world to join Red Sea military effort

Trade associations representing sectors across the global economy have joined an open letter urging more governments around the world to join Red Sea maritime security efforts. Currently, U.S.-led Operation Prosperity Guardian is the primary military defense effort protecting merchant vessels that have come under attack from Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. The trade groups' letter comes at a time when the scrutiny of military efforts in the Red Sea is rising within countries that have taken a lead role, including the U.S. Senators on the Foreign Relations Committee, as well as House representatives, have recently questioned the Biden administration's unilateral authorization of Navy action in the Red Sea that can be on behalf of foreign-flagged vessels. Despite political pressure, the flow of global trade remains heavily reliant on the use of foreign vessels.

U.S. import and export data shows that the majority of the country's trade is on foreign-flagged vessels. The Congressional calls to consider prioritizing U.S.-flagged vessels come at a time when the Iranian-backed Houthis continue to attack shipping in the Red Sea. Other nations, including U.S. ally France, have already declared their priority is to escort French-linked vessels after facing nationalistic pressure. "It could also be argued that directing military action to defend U.S. commercial shipping is within this power. However, most vessels transiting through the Red Sea are not U.S. ships, which raises questions about the extent to which these authorities can be exercised," they wrote.

☆ Global shipping rates set to jump as carriers avoid the Red Sea amid Houthi attacks

Freight prices are set to jump Monday, while longer transit times around Africa are disrupting and delaying deliveries of products. British clothing retailer Next recently warned of stock delays as a result of the longer ocean transit. "This creates strong motivations for ocean carrier(s) to increase rate(s) by establishing General Rate Increases (GRIs), Peak Season Surcharge (PSSs), and other contingency or emergency surcharges," the company said. "HLS warned Transpacific freight rates could spike to highs not seen since early 2022, with the Suez Canal route suspended, and the Panama Canal route restricted." Kuehne + Nagel analysts told CNBC that 419 vessels are currently being rerouted due to the Red Sea situation.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Goldman Sachs thinks late-stage biotech company Geron was due for a correction and now has the potential to surge higher. Analyst Corinne Jenkins upgraded Geron to buy from neutral. The analyst highlighted U.S. Food and Drug Administration acceptance of Geron's new drug application for imetelstat, a treatment for individuals with transfusion-dependent anemia in lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes, or MDS. Shares of Geron have taken a hit this year with a 27% drop this quarter and 3.3% in year-to-date losses. "Despite the AdCom, the physicians we spoke with see a very high likelihood of imetelstat approval based on the publicly available data," the analyst said.

Companies Gilead Sciences Inc FollowJuly 21 (Reuters) - Gilead Sciences Inc (GILD.O) said on Friday it was stopping a late-stage trial of its blood cancer combination treatment following an analysis that showed it would not be effective. Gilead, whose shares dropped over 1% in after-market trading, recommended that treatment with magrolimab in patients with MDS should be stopped. The company gained access to magrolimab with its $4.9 billion buyout of Forty Seven Inc in March 2020. Magrolimab is also in development for other types of cancer such as acute myeloid leukemia and solid tumours.
